LIVING A GODLY LIFE

2 Peter 1:3-10
By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.

The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.

10 So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away. 11 Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

COMMENT
When we have intimate relationship with God we are reminded regularly of His promises, who he is and who we are in him.

We are reminded who we truely are, it reinforces our identity and empowers us to do what he has called us to do. Sometimes we feel like what we don’t have what it takes but it important to remember that it’s not so much about us but about God and what he has already given us.

According to this passage, God has given us everything we need to live a godly life. Pause for a moment and reflect….God is sooooo good that the minute we say yes to Jesus and embrace him as our lord and saviour we received everything we need to live healthy, whole and full of life. We can’t do this ourselves, in our own strength. He promises guarantee a way to keep us free from the destructive power of our human desires.

We are encouraged to respond to his promises…..response requires us to make a decision and to take action. It doesn’t happen by default. We are to purse the following.

Moral excellence
Moral excellence with knowledge
Knowledge with self control
Self control with patient endurance
Patient endurance with godliness
Godliness with brotherly affection
Brotherly affection with with love for everyone

Perhaps when looking at this list you see a few areas of your life that need a little work….a few blind spots. This is the journey that we are all on, growing daily in this process. Be encouraged….speak to God, allow him to work in your life, to grow you and move you to a greater revelation of what he has done in your life and his promises. He has already made a way for us….he has given us EVERYTHING we need to live a Godly life.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. Do you sometimes feel like there is something missing or that you don’t possess everything you need to live a Godly life?

  2. Which of the above areas (Moral excellence, moral excellence with knowledge, etc.) do you do well in and which ones need a little work?

  3. How do you feel knowing that God has given you all you need to live free from your human desires?

PERSONAL CHALLENGE

Today, spend a minimum of 15min with God, no distractions, and ask him to speak to you about who you are in Christ, the inheritance you have been given, his promises and what he has done for you….ask him to help you to live out of these realities.

MAIN QUESTION (SELF REFLECTION)

What is God speaking to you about through this passage?

Encourage others by sharing your revelation in the group chat!
This is a self-reflection about what God is speaking directly to you about in YOUR life.
Words like “I” and “Me” are encouraged, “we” and “us” less so.
