HIS WAYS ARE HIGHER THAN MY WAYS

SCRIPTURE PASSAGE

Isaiah 55:8-9

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

COMMENT

The meaning of this scripture may come as a surprise to some of you. It’s is often used to express our inability to understand God at all, that he is somehow totally beyond our understanding and comprehension, that we have no hope of knowing who he is. However, in context, this passage isn’t saying that at all. While we are incapable of knowing God completely, it’s not true that he is totally beyond our understanding. Through his Word, personal revelation and through journeying with him we can get to know him. For example, from the word of God we know how he feels about us, the truth, marriage, His church, justice, the poor, and so many other things.

Have you ever thought that you’re clever, wise and resourceful only to find out later that you weren’t as smart as you thought you were? Sometimes hindsight is such an amazing teacher. I’m sure God has a chuckle sometimes at the silly decisions we make, especially the ones where he has not been included in the process. Perhaps this is why the bible instructs us not to become “wise in our own eyes (Proverbs 3:7).”

While we often only see our small piece of the puzzle, God always sees the bigger picture, the finished work. As his thoughts and ways are higher than ours, and so far above ours, we desperately need him and his wisdom in our lives. We need his guidance and direction and help to align ourselves with his will in the circumstances of our lives. This doesn’t happen by default but requires us to pause and invite his input (1 Chronicles 16:11).

Seeking and following his ways is the birthplace of miracles. It all starts with him. With God, nothing is impossible! Lord, we need your wisdom!

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. Have you ever been guilty to being “wise in your own eyes”?

  2. How well do you know God and how can you get to know him better?

  3. In what areas of your life do you need his wisdom and understanding?

MAIN QUESTION (SELF REFLECTION)

What is God speaking to you about in respect to seeking his wisdom and understanding?

Encourage others by sharing your revelation in the group chat on Planning Center!
This is a self-reflection about what God is speaking directly to you about in YOUR life.
Words like “I” and “Me” are encouraged, “we” and “us” less so.

PERSONAL PRAYER STARTER
