THE POWER OF AGREEMENT

SCRIPTURE PASSAGE

Luke 1:26-38 (NLT)
26
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel came to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favoured. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.”

29 When she saw him, she was troubled by his words, and considered in her mind what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. 31 Listen, you will conceive in your womb and bear a Son and shall call His name JESUS. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest. And the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, 33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. And of His kingdom there will be no end.”

34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”

35 The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you. Therefore the Holy One who will be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Listen, your cousin Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age. And this is the sixth month with her who was declared barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”

38 Mary said, “I am the servant of the Lord. May it be unto me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

COMMENT

Walt Disney - “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”
Nelson Mandela - “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
The angel Gabriel - “Nothing is impossible with God”

In this passage of scripture we read about one of the most impossible situations we could imagine, a virgin becoming pregnant. Now, let’s just pause for a moment. We know this story so well that it’s easy to not fully see the magnitude of this miracle. It was absolutely, downright impossible for Mary, a virgin, to get pregnant. But God made the laws of nature, and He can break them. He may as well said to Mary, “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit” (Zechariah 4:6). He spoke and it happened in an instant, she conceived! Walt Disney and Nelson Mendela did incredible things, but nothing in comparison to a virgin birth. God truely does the impossible!

When it comes to God’s plans coming to fruition, nothing is off limits. He is the everlasting God. The creator of the ends of the earth. He is great, he is mighty, he is awesome. He is abounding in love, slow to anger. Every word he speaks is flawless. God is light and there is no darkness in him. God had determined that this was going to happen and his word came to her. At this point the pre-requisite for this coming to pass was Mary’s agreement. In verse 38 Mary says, “I am the servant of the Lord. May it be unto me according to your word.” She was basically saying SO……BE……IT!

God’s power has no limits. With God nothing is impossible. Put another way, “NO THING” is impossible. Has the word of God come to you? Is there something that he has said to you that you need to come into agreement with? What is he saying to you right now? Stop fighting it, come into agreement with it and step out in faith!

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. Do you sometimes doubt God’s power? If yes, what is the source of your doubt?

  2. Is there something that God has said to you that you know that you need to come into agreement with?

  3. Is there something that you know that you need to step out in faith to see happen?

MAIN QUESTION (SELF REFLECTION)

What is God speaking to you about in respect to coming into agreement with his word?

Encourage others by sharing your revelation in the group chat on Planning Center!
This is a self-reflection about what God is speaking directly to you about in YOUR life.
Words like “I” and “Me” are encouraged, “we” and “us” less so.

PERSONAL PRAYER STARTER
Lord, nothing is impossible for you. Today I choose to come into agreement with what you have spoken over me.
