ACCORDING TO HIS WILL

SCRIPTURE

1 John 5:14 (ESV)

And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.

COMMENT

This verse is a great encouragement. John asserts the confidence that we can have in prayer. He assures us that God hears our prayers, that we can ask him anything “according to his will.” Interesting phrase, “according to his will.”

Understanding and knowing God’s will flows out of relationship with him. The more time we spend with him the more our desires and will align with his. Getting to know his will better flows out of submitting ourselves to God's loving authority, focusing on God's priorities and listening to Holy Spirit. These things massively impact what we ask of him in prayer.

Verses like this challenge the notion that God is a vending machine, a genie in the sky, that allows us to ask for anything we want. God is definitely not influenced by our ways. He acts in line with His ways, not ours. He listens to our prayers, but He responds in a way that fits His plan.

Asking according to His will is pre-requisite to the impossible.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. How much do you feel that you prayers align with his will?

  2. What do you do to get to know his will?

  3. What would help you to get to know his will better?

MAIN QUESTION (SELF REFLECTION)

What is God speaking to you about in respect to praying according to his will?

Encourage others by sharing your revelation in the group chat on Planning Center!
This is a self-reflection about what God is speaking directly to you about in YOUR life.
Words like “I” and “Me” are encouraged, “we” and “us” less so.

PERSONAL PRAYER STARTER
Lord, I want to know your heart and will. Help me to know your will better.
