DOING THE WILL OF GOD

SCRIPTURE PASSAGE

John 4:31-38 (NLT)
Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.” 33 “Did someone bring him food while we were gone?” the disciples asked each other. 34 Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work. 35 You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest. 36 The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike! 37 You know the saying, ‘One plants and another harvests.’ And it’s true. 38 I sent you to harvest where you didn’t plant; others had already done the work, and now you will get to gather the harvest.”

SCRIPTURE FOCUS

John 4:34 (NLT)
Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God…

COMMENT
Where do you get your nourishment? In the first part of this verse, Jesus’ says that his nourishment comes from doing the will of God.

Beyond merely believing, an active faith that trusts in God naturally results in action. Believing is merely the beginning. James 2:19 (NLT) says, “You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.” Jesus didn’t just believe in God and leave it at that, he knew God’s will for his life and walked in it. He made the sacrifices and paid the price in his own life. He didn’t get distracted by the things of the world. He died to self and put Gods’ plan for his life above his own. It’s no wonder his life was full of miracles, signs and wonders. There is a definite link between doing the will of God and the impossible.

Jesus didn’t just believe in God, he acted. The world would try to have you believe that your way is best, that you should follow what feels right to you and that this will lead to satisfaction. It so easy to want to take the easy way, the path of least resistance, to choose the most comfortable route. However, God has called us to follow his will even when it’s difficult, even if it’s uncomfortable, even if it’s challenging. I’m so glad that Jesus didn’t take the easy way out but instead choose Gods way above his own.

Following God’s will for your life is the pathway to a mature faith, it transforms us into the likeness of Christ and the best bit is that every time we choose to follow His will we learn something new about God, about his nature and character. It’s not about us but what he’s done and continues to do in our lives. It’s about taking the the good news to the world and seeing his plans outworked. When we acknowledge him for who he is, have a heart to worship and serve him by doing His will above our own, it brings great nourishment to our souls. Walking in his will is the stomping ground for the impossible.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. How do you seek God’s will?

  2. What challenges have you faced in choosing God’s will above your own?

  3. What have you learned about God by choosing his will above your own?

This is a self-reflection about what God is speaking directly to you about in YOUR life.
