I AM SENT

SCRIPTURE PASSAGE

John 4:31-38 (NLT)
Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.” 33 “Did someone bring him food while we were gone?” the disciples asked each other. 34 Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work. 35 You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest. 36 The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike! 37 You know the saying, ‘One plants and another harvests.’ And it’s true. 38 I sent you to harvest where you didn’t plant; others had already done the work, and now you will get to gather the harvest.”

COMMENT

In scripture, Jesus repeatedly said that he had been sent by the Father. Not only did he know that he was sent, he was also able to clearly articulate what he was here to do. Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favour has come (Luke 4:18-19 - NLT). Jesus was fully aware with every part of his being that he was sent to carry out God's will, and he accomplished it flawlessly, both in his life and through his death. As his disciples we too are sent. We have been commissioned to tell the world about Jesus, to do good works in His name and to glorify Him in every area of our lives.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matt 28:16-20).”

This is what we are here to do. But in a busy world with so many things competing for our attention it so easy to loose sight of it and to forget why we are here. It’s a great idea to pause sometimes, take stock and assess the various areas of our lives and filter them through our primary mission. Jesus led a focussed and effective life that had a massive impact on the world from that day forward. He was prepared to pay the price to fulfil his mission and do what he was sent to do. It was in this space that we see Gods’ mighty power at work.

Make no mistake, YOU ARE SENT! When you know you’re sent you go with the full force of heaven on your side. This is the place of miracles.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. What does being “sent” mean to you?

  2. Do you see yourself as sent? If yes, where to?

  3. What challenges do you face in making the great commission your primary focus?

  4. Do you see evidence of God’s power operating in your life as a result of being sent?

MAIN QUESTION (SELF REFLECTION)

What is God speaking to you about in respect to doing His will?

Encourage others by sharing your revelation in the group chat on Planning Center!
This is a self-reflection about what God is speaking directly to you about in YOUR life.
Words like “I” and “Me” are encouraged, “we” and “us” less so.
