FINISHING HIS WORK

SCRIPTURE PASSAGE

John 4:31-38 (NLT)
Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.” 33 “Did someone bring him food while we were gone?” the disciples asked each other. 34 Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work. 35 You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest. 36 The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike! 37 You know the saying, ‘One plants and another harvests.’ And it’s true. 38 I sent you to harvest where you didn’t plant; others had already done the work, and now you will get to gather the harvest.”

SCRIPTURE FOCUS

John 4:34 (NLT)
Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.

COMMENT
Yep, that’s right, just like Jesus, God has work for you to do! It’s so easy to forget this truth. He hasn’t got you here simply to pursue your own agenda.

Sometimes we can become so distracted by what we perceive as “our work” that we miss what he wants us to do. We can become so self-focussed on what we want from life that we don’t have time for God and His work. Jesus knew that God had work for him to do while on planet Earth and he knew this would require him to put aside the things that he may have wanted to do in life. He also knew that finishing God’s work would bring nourishment to his soul. There’s a price to pay for doing God’s work but the benefits far out ways the cost and Jesus knew it. He knew the impact God’s work would have on mankind and it’s impact on eternity. Likewise, everything you do for God matters, nothing is wasted. Worldly things are temporary and will disappear but work done for God will stand forever. What will you invest in, the temporal or the eternal?

Jesus was very clear that his objective wasn’t just to do God’s work but to complete it. I wonder if when we stand before God at the end of our life that we’ll be able to say to him that we completed the work he had for us. Are you good at finishing jobs or do you have a house full of half finished “projects”? Starting can sometimes be challenging but finishing can sometimes be even harder. Be encouraged, seek God daily for what he wants you to do today and he will speak to you…keep it simple. God’s power is fully behind completing His work. When God speaks things happen, the impossible becomes reality.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. How do you feel about God having work for you to do?

  2. What challenges have you faced in doing His work?

  3. How can you better position yourself to do His work?

MAIN QUESTION (SELF REFLECTION)

What is God speaking to you about in respect to doing His work?

Encourage others by sharing your revelation in the group chat on Planning Center!
This is a self-reflection about what God is speaking directly to you about in YOUR life.
Words like “I” and “Me” are encouraged, “we” and “us” less so.

PERSONAL PRAYER STARTER
Lord, today I choose your will above my own. Speak into my life and give me the courage and strength to follow you will above my own. In Jesus name.

14 DAYS OF PRAYER (Corporate Prayer)
Today we are praying for our LOCAL GOVERNMENT LEADERS.
Possible prayer areas: Holy Spirit, we ask you to fill our city, state, and national political leaders with wisdom, understanding, discernment, and knowledge. Draw them to you and cause them to know and fulfil your purposes.
