SESSION NOTES FOR PART 9
FIVE REFLECTIONS AS A LEADER
1. PEOPLE BECOME LIKE THEIR LEADER
Three Statements
1. It will take a conscious effort to appreciate and attract people who are different to the leadership.
2. The people tend to have the same strengths and weaknesses of the leadership.
3. The leadership must change before the people.
Change
Leaders resist change as much as followers, unless it’s their idea.
Leaders can resist change more than followers as they have their turf.
People do what people see.
2. LEADING OTHERS TAKES COURAGE
Thoughts
Knowing the right decision is easy, making the right decision is hard.
People are tough to lead.
Leaders have to make the tough decisions.
Six Lessons in Tough Decisions
1. A leader is responsible to place the interest of the organisation first.
2. Each courageous call required much time, energy and prayer.
3. Each courageous call demanded risk.
4. Each courageous call was questioned and criticised.
5. Each courageous call cost me greatly.
6. Each courageous call lifted me to a higher level.
3. HURTING PEOPLE, HURT PEOPLE
The people who hurt you in church are the people that are hurt.
Kill hurting people with unconditional love and kindness.
Hurting people don’t aim to hurt you, they just do.
Do not take hurting people personally. Look beyond what they do or say and just realise they are hurting. When you learn this lesson, it will be easier to turn the other cheek.
Love hurting people but NEVER let them rise up in your organisation. If you put a hurting person in a power position in church, a lot of people will get hurt.
Rate the number of hurting people in your organisation.
4. MY PERSONAL GROWTH DETERMINES MY PEOPLE’S GROWTH
Combined growth (Leader and followers) determines the growth of the congregation.
Whatever area you are growing in is what you are going to grow with your people. If you’re learning something, pass it on quickly to your people.
Never stop growing. Have a plan for you growth because it’s not automatic.
Rate your personal growth rate, your people’s growth rate and your organisation’s growth.
NOTE: Your personal growth should be higher than your people and your organisation’s growth rate but it should not be a lot higher than the other two - it should be a few degrees behind.
5. LEADERSHIP FUNCTIONS ON THE BASIS OF TRUST
There are three times a leader receives trust:
1. Trust that is given (by the previous leader). The previous leader has been trustworthy, therefore the people will assume the next leader is trustworthy and trust you.
2. Trust that is earned. (This comes slowly and can only be earned by the present leader, based on integrity).
3. Trust that is given by people. When what the leader says and what the leader does is consistent, the result is success. If the people ever sense that you are trying to manipulate them, you are in deep trouble.
Character is more important than charisma.
6. PEOPLE ARE A LEADERS
